Portable fans have become genuinely useful in Indian summers — on platforms, in autos, during power cuts, at outdoor weddings. But the listings are almost all photographs and almost no specifications. Here is what to look for.
1. RPM decides airflow, not size
The most common mistake is buying the biggest fan. A larger fan turning slowly moves less air than a small fan turning fast. RPM is the number that matters.
A typical handheld fan runs 2,000-4,000 RPM. A turbo model like the TF-04 runs 13,000 RPM, which is a different category of airflow — closer to a hairdryer's blower than a desk fan. If a listing does not state RPM, that is usually because it is not impressive.
2. Brushless motors are worth the difference
A brushed motor uses physical contacts that wear down. A brushless motor uses electronic commutation instead. In practice this means it runs quieter, lasts significantly longer, and wastes less energy as heat — so you get more runtime from the same battery.
On a device you will use every day through summer, this is the specification most likely to determine whether it still works next year.
3. Battery capacity decides runtime
Look for the mAh rating. A 2000mAh battery in a turbo fan gives you meaningful runtime at high speed; smaller cells will manage an hour or two. Remember that runtime figures are almost always quoted at the lowest speed. If you plan to use the fan on high, halve the claim.
Type-C charging is worth insisting on. A fan that still uses micro-USB means another cable in your bag.
4. Noise
High RPM and low noise pull against each other. A 13,000 RPM turbo fan is not silent. If you want a fan for a desk while you work or beside a bed, look for a model that advertises an ultra-silent motor and accept lower airflow — the TF-01 is tuned that way, with 3-speed control and a built-in phone holder.
5. Practical extras that actually get used
