A phone torch is fine for finding a dropped key. It is useless for a power cut that lasts three hours, for walking a field at night, or for anything that needs light more than a few metres away. Here is what separates a torch worth buying.
1. Beam distance beats lumens
Lumens measure total light output. They say nothing about where that light goes. A 1,000-lumen flood lamp lights a room brightly but throws barely 20 metres. A focused beam at the same lumens can throw 200.

2. Runtime on high, not on low
Almost every torch quotes runtime at its lowest brightness, where the figure looks impressive. During an actual power cut you will run it on medium or high. Ask what the runtime is on high — that is the number that matters, and it is usually a fraction of the headline.
3. Rechargeable, not disposable
A rechargeable torch costs more upfront and much less over a year. It also means you are not hunting for cells during a power cut, which is precisely when shops are shut. Look for USB or Type-C charging so you can top it up from a power bank — that combination is genuinely useful during a long outage.
4. Waterproofing is not optional in India
Power cuts and monsoon arrive together. A torch that fails in rain fails exactly when you need it. Look for a stated waterproof rating rather than the word "waterproof" on its own.
