A laptop bag is bought once and regretted for years. The failure modes are consistent and easy to avoid if you know what to check before ordering.
Size: measure the laptop, not the label
A "15.6-inch" bag is sized to a typical 15.6-inch laptop, but screen size does not fix the chassis dimensions. A thin 15.6 with narrow bezels can be smaller than a chunky 14. Measure your laptop's width, depth and thickness and compare against the bag's stated internal compartment size, not the external one.
Leave roughly 1cm of clearance. A snug fit means the padding is compressed and doing nothing.
The padding that matters
Most damage happens when a bag is set down, not while it is carried. That means the bottom padding is the critical one, and it is where cheap bags cut corners. A suspended laptop compartment — one that does not touch the base of the bag — is the single best protective feature at any price.
Check also that the laptop sleeve has a closure. An open sleeve lets the laptop slide out when the bag is tilted.
Backpack, handbag or pouch?

What to check on the straps
Stitching at the strap anchor points is where bags fail first. Look for bar-tack stitching or a reinforced patch, not a single line of thread. Strap width matters too — under 5cm digs in once the bag is loaded.
A luggage pass-through strap on the back is worth more than it sounds if you travel: it lets the bag sit on a trolley handle instead of on your shoulder.
Water resistance in Indian conditions
Between June and September this stops being optional. Water-resistant fabric handles a walk in rain; it is not waterproof and will not survive a downpour. Check the zips as much as the fabric — an uncovered zip is the entry point. A bag with a storm flap over the main zip is meaningfully better than one without.
The compartment count trap
More pockets is not better. Bags with a dozen compartments tend to have a smaller main compartment and you forget which pocket holds what. Two or three well-placed compartments plus a separate laptop sleeve is the practical configuration.
Common questions
Will a 15.6-inch bag fit a 16-inch laptop? Sometimes, if the 16 has thin bezels. Measure rather than assume.
Is leather better than fabric? Leather looks better and ages better; fabric is lighter and handles rain more forgivingly. For a daily Indian commute, fabric usually wins on practicality.
How much weight can a laptop backpack carry? A well-made one handles 8-10kg comfortably. Beyond that, the straps rather than the fabric become the limit.
Do I need a separate charger pouch? If you carry a charger, cables and a power bank daily, yes — it saves more time than it costs.
