Almost every pair of budget earbuds in India now advertises ENC. Fewer listings explain what it does, and a lot of buyers assume it means noise cancellation in the sense they have heard about. It does not.
ENC vs ANC: the difference that matters
ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) works on the microphone. It uses multiple mics to separate your voice from background noise, so the person on the other end of the call hears you clearly. It does nothing for what you hear.
ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) works on the speaker. It generates an inverted sound wave to cancel steady background noise — engine hum, air conditioning, aircraft cabin — so you hear less of the world around you.
Put simply: ENC helps the person you are talking to. ANC helps you.
Does ENC actually work?
Yes, and it is one of the few budget-earbud features that genuinely delivers. On a call from a busy road, ENC is the difference between the other person hearing you and the other person hearing traffic. It works best on consistent background noise and less well on sudden sounds like a horn.
What it cannot do is remove a person talking loudly next to you. Voice-versus-voice is a much harder problem, and no budget implementation solves it.
Does ANC work at this price?
More cautiously. Good ANC needs quality mics, fast processing and a well-sealed fit. At the budget end, ANC often reduces low-frequency hum modestly rather than producing silence. It is real, but manage expectations — and note that fit matters more than the ANC circuit. Poorly sealed earbuds with ANC block less noise than well-sealed ones without it.

What to buy for what
- Mostly calls, often outdoors? Prioritise ENC. The Earwaves S66 and Earwaves S100 both have it.

- Both? Many current earbuds carry ENC and ANC together — check the listing states both explicitly, not just "noise cancellation".
One more term you will see
Passive noise isolation is just the physical seal of the eartip. It costs nothing, it works on all frequencies, and it is why swapping to the correct eartip size often improves things more than any electronics. If your earbuds came with three sizes, try all three.
