Smartwatch Buying Guide India: What Works Under Rs 2500

Under Rs 2,500 the Indian smartwatch market is crowded and the listings are close to indistinguishable. Almost all of them claim the same features. Here is what separates the ones worth owning.

What is genuinely reliable at this price

  • Step counting — accurate enough to be useful as a trend, not as a measurement
  • Sleep duration — roughly right on when you fell asleep and woke
  • Notifications — the feature people actually use daily
  • Bluetooth calling — now standard, and it works for short calls
  • Battery of 5-7 days with normal use, 2-3 with always-on display

What is not reliable, whatever the listing says

  • SpO2 (blood oxygen). Budget optical sensors report plausible numbers rather than accurate ones. Do not make a health decision on them.
  • Blood pressure. No wrist-worn optical sensor at any price measures this properly without a cuff. Treat it as a novelty.
  • Continuous heart rate during exercise. Fine at rest; drifts badly during high-intensity movement.
  • Sleep stages. Deep versus REM breakdowns at this price are estimates dressed as data.

Buying a budget smartwatch for health monitoring is the most common mistake. Buying one for notifications, calls, timers and step trends is a good purchase.

The specs worth comparing

Display size and brightness. A 1.83-inch screen is the current sweet spot for readability. Brightness in nits matters more than resolution for outdoor use in Indian daylight — under 500 nits you will be shading the screen with your hand.

Bluetooth calling quality. Check that there is a dedicated mic and speaker, not just call-answering support. The Salpido SW-01 Aurora at Rs 2,279 and the SW-02 at Rs 1,379 both handle calls directly from the wrist.

Strap standard. A proprietary strap means you replace the watch when the strap goes. A standard 20mm or 22mm quick-release strap means a Rs 200 fix.

Water rating. IP67 survives rain and handwashing. IP68 or 5ATM is needed for swimming — and most budget watches are not.

Battery claims: how to read them

The headline number assumes the always-on display is off, heart-rate monitoring is on its slowest interval and you receive few notifications. Halve it for a realistic figure with normal use. Standby time is a separate and much larger number that means the watch is doing nothing — ignore it.

Does the app matter?

More than most buyers expect. The watch hardware across this price band is broadly similar; the companion app is what you interact with daily. Check that the app is actively updated and does not require excessive permissions.

Common questions

Will a budget smartwatch work with an iPhone? For notifications and calls, generally yes, though some app features are Android-first.

How accurate is the step count? Within roughly 5-10% for walking. Arm movement while sitting can add phantom steps.

Can I reply to WhatsApp from the watch? On Android, usually with quick replies. On iOS, typically not.

Does it need to stay connected to the phone? For notifications and calls, yes. Step and sleep tracking continue offline and sync later.
